Professor Edward Janus has a long-standing interest in blood lipid abnormalities which can be genetic, due to lifestyle or may be associated with obesity, diabetes, thyroid, liver or kidney disease.

He has worked in specialist lipid disorder clinics in England, New Zealand and Australia and has experience with the relevant laboratory investigations and novel treatments. He is interested in patients who have high levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoprotein (a) including those who prove difficult to control or who have problems with medication.

Until recently Edward worked as Head of General Internal Medicine and Director of Research at Western Health and was a Professorial Fellow in the Department of Medicine University of Melbourne. He has published over 250 research papers.

He graduated MB ChB from Otago University New Zealand and subsequently MD with distinction for research on genetic causes of emphysema. He then obtained his PhD in London studying lipoprotein metabolism in familial lipid disorders.

Has worked in Clinical biochemistry and medicine in New Zealand, England, Australia and Hong Kong. In Hong Kong he was chief investigator in the 1994-96 Cardiovascular Risk factor Prevalence study in which the high 10% prevalence of type 2 diabetes in adults was the complete surprise finding. This study still continues.

His ongoing research interests are the epidemiology and prevention of diabetes and cardiovascular disease and in translating research into practice in the real world.

He is President of the Heart Research Centre in Melbourne and Treasurer of Asian Pacific Society of Atherosclerosis and Vascular Diseases and Executive Board Member of the Asia Pacific Federation of the International Atherosclerosis Society.
